Broken Barca

If it can happen to them, it could happen to others; it may also be interesting how this may even extend eventually into actually affecting other clubs. There will come a point of "correction", financially, when it comes to football; how it comes and when it does is anyone's guess.

Good to see Christensen and Kessie have been clever with their contract. This is exactly what I said I would be doing if I was a going to sign for Barca currently. There is no way I would be allowing them not to register me without a get out clause.

This is everything the club licensing and FFP rules should be there to stop.

All they are doing is kicking the can further down the road and this will eventually catch up with them. Short termism due to the nature of their elections.

Deferring their players wages and then trying to get out of paying them what they are owed should be a big enough red flag to kick them out of the league unless there is an agreed payment schedule in place.

Press in Spain were claiming they were signing Bernardo Silva for £40m yesterday.

Man City denied it but likely something in it.

They’re the football version of someone you’d see on one of these BBC programmes about managing your money.

Some simpleton from Essex on £22k a year who drinks champagne in nightclubs, drives a BMW 1 series, gets her hair done every week and can’t understand why she’s £30k in debt.

Lionel Messi, was he worth it?

Why aren't they being booted out of the league and European competition? Ridiculous that they are allowed to continue as if nothing had happened.
They're not being allowed to continue as if nothing has happened. The Spanish FA are refusing to register their new players (and existing players who have signed new contracts) until they meet the financial rules.

Read somewhere they still owe 19 other clubs money for previous transfers, makes it even more ridiculous theyre spending so much. Hope they go bust but know they wont

Have they missed any scheduled payments to those clubs though?

Given the success he brought them and the cash he brought in, then yes, I’d say he was!

Barca are an absolute basket case, but none of that was Messi’s fault.
It’s not necessarily his fault, but his cost over the period most certainly is part of that debt

It's well documented that Messi brought in more to Barca than he received.

Worth noting that Betis are in a similar position as well.

Catalan government will bail them out with Brown envelopes
The good thing about FFP is you need to prove your revenue so not even brown bags can save them - unless they pay off players with money to terminate their contracts?

The main reason they are in this state is down to whoever is their president being Laporta or Bartomeau assuming La Liga and UEFA would just roll over and allow their bellies to be tickled despite Barcelona acting like corporate fraudsters.

La Liga don't look like caving and UEFA will be tested in the near future to see if they stack up when it comes to their own FFP rules.

This is them with Messi's £25 Million plus a year salary off the budget too. An absolute shambles of a club. Hopefully they are the first of many big overspenders to come crashing down.
Remember when they could afford to do without shirt sponsors. How the times have changed.

If anything Messi helped them. Lazy to blame him.

Also next season they are having to play at another ground as the Nou Camp is being done up, which will massively reduce their gate money.

Messi taking some amount of flak, simply for being the best player in the world and commanding wages to match that.

You imagine the state Barca would be in if they never had Messi all those years, for shirt sales, tourist interests.

Barca would've hit mediocrity and been forgotten a decade ago.

Barcelona's position could depend on who holds influence in the Spanish football authorities.

Imagine Rangers fighting the SFA/SPFL in a matter which might hold us back. We would be swimming against a tidal wave.

Are the Spanish authorities likely to afford Barcelona any wiggle room on player registration, or are they facing the kind of enmity that we would get in a similar clash with our football governing bodies?

ie...which foot do the Spanish FA kick with (football wise)?

When you pay multi millions for single players and trying to keep up with a team bankrolled decades more than yourselves by the same Govt what did you think would end up happening? Wake up Lewis Steele!

Surprised Celtic fans have not went after them for all that money could go to schools, hospitals and chapels? Oops they have their own thing going!

Randomly, the President of the Spanish FA was playing for Hamilton in 2009.
