I’ve just read an article in the Daily Record (came across this on social media and only clicked it to see what sensationalist bullshit it was) that states Rangers are “on the verge” of breaking two penalty World Records.
Firstly, we are five penalties away from the record for most penalties awarded in a season, which is currently 23 for Barcelona in 2015/16. We have 19 penalties:
- 14 in the League
- 2 in the Scottish Cup
- 2 in the League Cup
- 1 in Champions League Qual.
To break this World Record we would need five penalties in our last 8/9 games of the season, which clearly isn’t going to happen.
And it gets better. In the article it states, “last season, they were awarded 13 penalties, joint-most in Scotland with Hearts and two more than
Celtic. This campaign, however, Rangers are out on their own.”
“Out on our own”? We are level with Celtic on penalties received in the league. They received none in the cup competitions, however given they got papped out the League Cup at the first hurdle, it’s hardly fair to draw comparisons there. Our remaining penalty was against Servette in the CL qualifiers. Hardly “out on our own” at all.
The club needs to come down hard on these media outlets to stop this bullshit narrative being peddled, it’s a total farce and is designed to influence how we are officiated. Just google “Rangers penalties” and you’ll find an abundance of articles from various outlets pushing this shite, including one from Richard Gordon who flat-out claims there is a bias towards Rangers which is outrageous.
Rangers have been awarded more spot-kicks than anyone in Scotland this season by a distance and could achieve the most EVER by May.
