Premier League spending cap.

No details yet, but apparently clubs voted in favour of it.

Premier League clubs have agreed in principle to introduce a spending cap.
A majority of clubs voted in favour of the spending cap, which will be determined by the amount of money earned in television rights by the lowest-earning club in the Premier League.
If approved at June's AGM, the new model will replace the Profit and Sustainability Regulations presently used from the 2025-26 season onwards.
The league's current financial rules, which have seen Everton and Nottingham Forest penalised six and four points respectively this season, have been criticised for favouring clubs with the highest revenue.
The new model is being referred to as "anchoring".

More to follow

Not sure how this works for teams going into Europe though, if other countries can carry on as normal
Imagine it happens in Scotland and we’re tied to spending the same as Ross County…

I'm sure that article is wrong, it doesn't affect wages as there is still no salary cap, only the amount you can spend on transfers. Maybe I'm interpreting that wrong.

Taking into account this season. Brentford has the lowest TV revenue at £109M (I know!), so the cap for this season would have been £518M. Only Chelsea spent over that amount.

Would have to wait to see the full details but it seems broadly similar to the cap that La Liga currently have for all their top division sides.

With the commercial and merchandising income the top clubs in the EPL have it will still keep them ahead of most competition in EPL and Europe, but it will certainly force them to be slightly more considered on the players they are throwing big money at

Suspect any spending cap will still see the big clubs outspending the smaller clubs otherwise what happens is the Man Citys/Uniteds start losing out in Europe because they cant compete with clubs that dont have spending caps.

Would make the league more competitive for sure.

Different in Scotland of course, the English TV deal is still the most lucrative in the world where as ours is as competitive as Somalia.

I would imagine the spending cap will still have the EPL teams spending more than the rest of the world.

Similar plans are coming in for European competitions

That's the correct interpretation, but it would be £518m net spend on transfers.

Feels like there is still plenty of room for maneuver there if a rich new.owner fancies going nuts.

Feels like it's a shade under what Chelsea have just done

It works out to be about £500m a year they can spend. Will make no difference whatsoever

The spending cap is the overall amount that can be spent on player wages, staff wages, transfer fees ( amortised) and agent fees.

I prefer to watch a lower league match with proper passion and proper fans. I much prefer Scottish and Irish league to the commercialised shite of the EPL. Each to their own but very seldom now id watch an EPL match. Its usually only on in the background with me

I go Championship or Non League most weeks mate so I know what it is like. As you say each to their own, wouldn't be choosing most of what I watch in person over the Premier League if at home anyway.

Same will apply to others, especially Scum FC who seem to have loads of money

Give me the EPL over virtually anything these days.

Great entertainment played in front of full stadia.

I was a Serie A fan boy back in the day but barely watch any of it these days.

EPL retains its number 1 position in world football for a reason.

Love it.

No teams in the Champions League or Europa League. Number 1 in terms of brand, perhaps

Brand and most watchable.

To be fair, English clubs have done very well across the European tournaments over the years.

And the number of English finalists in the CL over the past 10 years or so has been very impressive. Several finals with both English teams in them as well.

No change then. Any money left over will go to shareholders. They are still the richest league in Europe, whether they’re the best is up for argument. The money they spend for mediocre players is ridiculous. They also cherry pick young players who earn lots of money but ultimately destroy their careers and has a negative effect on leagues like ourselves.

Based on what the article says the cap is going to be higher than what teams are already allowed to spend so if anything it will actually be 'fairer' overall, but anyone who's not owned by or getting sold to a billionaire anytime soon will be odds on for getting relegated

Current rules are you can 'lose' £105m over 3 seasons before anything happens, If the cap is 5x the lowest teams TV money Newcastle e.g. could double there wage bill and still improve their squad to the tune of 400m+ a season while being under the 'cap'

I think it’s fairly even between Serie A, PL and La Liga. Certainly don’t think the PL is streets ahead the way people have you believe

Can’t have that with Serie A like, weakest in years this one. Think La Liga has gone backwards in recent years as well, it really needed Real to improve after last season - they need others to follow now.

Yup, mostly foreigners.

It's overrated pish. Most of it is hype and they spend weeks building up games that inevitably are rubbish.

Most have delivered this last few months to be fair, City v Arsenal was never going to be electric at the end of the day.

Must be about 3 goals average a game now? Personally found it a great watch this season, terraces will never be the same but that’s true of most of Britain now.

You say that, but in sporting terms, Serie A has had 4 different winners in 5 years and all of those titles have been won by 5 different managers. Allegri, Conte, Pioli, Spaletti and now Inzaghi. If Serie A and the Italian authorities could just get their shit together and allow teams to start owning and building their own stadiums, then maybe progress could be made. The sporting element is great, it's just badly let down by the spectacle. That's where the EPL trumps the rest, their marketing and management of the spectacle down south is just superb.

The quality ain’t up there with the Premier League though is it, that’s the point. I’ve been to more Serie A matches this last decade than I have Premier League ones, far prefer the atmosphere at them myself.

I'm not bothered who is in it.

I'm a Rangers fan. That's my main focus obviously and i go home and away. But when watching 'other' football the EPL is always at the top of my watch-list.

It's simply the best entertainment and most exciting.

Its telling that no-one can name a more exciting or higher entertaining league.
