In Memory of George Nelson and Thomas Thomson
The Ibrox Disaster Of 1961
It was the Sixteenth of September in Nineteen Sixty One
The Rangers hosted Celtic and fought 'til the day was done
Gales howled around the Stadium as the teams ran out to play
While tragedy lay looming on that fateful Autumn day
Christie scored for Rangers but then Divers equalised
When Fernie made it Two-One even he looked quite surprised
With two minutes left upon the clock, Slim Jim stepped into view
His thunderbolt from 30 yards tied things at Two-Two
The fans were just delirious, their team had played so well
But what happenned on that stairway it breaks my heart to tell
Amongst the jam packed singing crowd a barrier gave way
Two Rangers lost their lives amid that awful sway
Cheers which moments earlier had risen to the skies
Were replaced by eerie silence interspersed by cries
Every other Saturday had become a day of woe
The blue blue sea of Ibrox from whence the teardrops flow
Thomas Thomson hailed from Gourock, George Nelson, Penilee
They loved the Glasgow Rangers just like you and me
Within our hearts a flame of love for them will always burn
Those young men who left home for Ibrox never to return
Tommy left behind a daughter, a princess in his eyes
Now he looks down on her from that mansion in the skies
With pride he sees her now through the passing of the years
And sends his love to wipe away all her pain and tears.
We never will forget them, we salute the Rangers Two
For each of them were one of us, each of them True Blue
Each one was a brother each one was a son
Loved by friends and family, loved by everyone
The lettering with broken heart was painted on each stone
For the Family of Rangers look after their own
God bless you George and Tommy we raise a glass to you
Up there among our absent friends adorned in Royal Blue
Rest Easy Dear Friends
