CELTIC continue to have a vast financial advantage over the rest of the Scottish Premiership, according to the 2018 Global Sports Salaries Survey.

The report, produced by sportingintelligence.com, states that first-team players at the reigning Scottish champions pick up a basic weekly average of £16,646 – £865,614 annually.

In comparison, Rangers pay their players £8,972 per week, which amounts to a median of £466,556 over a 12-month period.

These figures have increased from the 2017 report, which said Celtic and Rangers handed out weekly wages of £14,135 and £6,338 respectively.

In turn, Celtic have risen four places to 199th out of 349 global sports teams surveyed, with Rangers climbing 13 to 243rd compared to last year’s survey.

Aberdeen are third on the domestic list at £2,667 (£138,667), with Hearts fourth with £2,146 (£111,600), just ahead of city rivals Hibs at £1,988 (£103,376).

The reports shows the gap between the richest and the poorest is growing, with top-flight newcomers Livingston paying the least amount on salaries at £671 per week (£34,882).

Despite currently being bottom of the league, Dundee are sixth on the list, with players earning £1,208 weekly.

The report states: “Celtic had revenue of £102m in 2017-18, three times that of Rangers on £33m, in turn double that of Aberdeen, in turn bigger than Hearts and Hibs (£12m and a bit less), in turn double Kilmarnock’s. Celtic can afford a total salary bill of nearly £60m, average basic in the high six figures and bonus-inclusive numbers of more than £1m a man.

“The difference between the average basic Celtic salary at the top of the Scottish Premiership pay list (£865,614) and the average Livingston basic at the bottom (£35,000) is even larger than last season.

To put this into context, there is considerably less of a resource gulf between Celtic and reigning Premier League champions Manchester City than between Celtic and most clubs in their own division.

“Using our GSSS numbers from this report, City players earn ‘only’ seven times as much as those at Celtic, who in turn earn around 20 times the basic paid at Motherwell, Hamilton and St Johnstone.

“Celtic were paying substantially more than double Rangers last year but we think it won’t be quite double this year.

“It isn’t a shock that Celtic began the season with expectations they would win an eighth league title in a row. It is 33 years since any team other than Celtic or Rangers won the title: Aberdeen in 1985.”

Spanish club Barcelona have returned to the top of the salaries table having become the first team in the nine-year history of the Global Sports Salaries Survey to pay players on average more than £10m a year.

La Liga rivals Real Madrid are second, handing out £8.1m annually, while NBA teams Oklahoma City Thunder, Golden State Warriors, Washington Wizards, Toronto Raptors, Houston Rockets and Miami Heat occupy positions three-to-eight.

Italian Serie A club Juventus are ninth (£6,726,615) just ahead of English counterparts Manchester United in 10th (£6,534,654).

It is hard to grasp the context. Our problem has not been so much the spend on wages / players but the revolving door and every season starting from scratch. The Aberdeen chat about Rangers spending more on one hand is correct but on the other hand we start again.

This is what I hope will change.

Our accounts will improve massively by this time next year. We’ll have a £50m turnover again which is pretty much pre-2012 levels.

Tims will come way down as well. How much does Champions League money account for in their £100m+ turnover cos If thats say £40m then they don’t have much to play with if their wages really are £60m. Interesting to see their next year accounts.

Rangers turnover should increase by 50% through European money and merchandise. That other mobs should decrease by about 20% no cl money. We will be closer to their turnover next year.

Christ, if Dundee are 6th at approx 1200 a week, Motherwell and Hamilton must be paying their players in packets of discos!

Not for long.

What is this? A financial analyst's wet dream? The spend means nothing even if it results in success; it is value that should be mentioned in reports like this. But again that is subjective and open to interpretation.

Martin Compper anyone?

If I was a poet, I would be nervous on many fronts just now.
Makes a change from being nervous about their rear.:D

They spent around 2.5 million to sign Compper and Jack Hendry. When you factor in wages that's some atrocious business. Another year without Champions league football, with all the legal fears flying about there just now, there would be mass panic.

When they get it in it's a £30m+ windfall. When they get knocked out it's only £20m.

It's incredibly important that mob miss out on CL money. Their current expenditure surely cannot be sustainable without it.

Totally correct. Two seasons without CL football and it's sell, sell, sell over there.

However, I prefer to focus on our own affairs. In our case, it is vital that we get this merchandising deal sorted out.

God I absolutely hate Murray, Shyte and the spivs. The damage that lot did to our club is still being horribly felt even today. Every time we read figures like this report, we should all be thanking our lucky stars at the same time that Dave King and TTB came in to help all of us wrest control of our club back into the hands of people who actually want what's best for the club, not to line their own filthy pockets.

This is a huge issue. Missing out on CL money will rapidly mean financial problems for the mentally challengeds - player sales will be the norm and their replacement with inferior alternatives. Roll on the day and roll on the day for 55 to send them over the edge.

Absolutely mate. We are heading in the right direction as our own accounts should hopefully reflect next year. It's a disgrace that only now are we showing proper signs of recovery from the damage those rats caused.

We proved twenty years ago that trying to compete at the sharp end of the CL and all that that entails in terms of squad size and its wage bill is unsustainable whilst operating domestically in Scotland. Due in no small part to tv money or lack of it, the odds are stacked against clubs from small leagues, and leagues that are bigger and better than ours.

All this does is show that Brendan likes to spend and often doesn't get value. Just ask Fenway Sports Group about him.

I can’t help thinking a total repackaging of Scottish football is the way forward. Just like sky did in the early 90s with the premier league. Obviously in a far smaller scale, the problem is, in Scotland there are too many people at the top with an agenda and it shows.
