Who is our best outfield player?

All the 'Tav' replies are an indication of how far we have fallen. There is a new mindset amongst our supporters that second and mediocrity is ok. I find that hard to accept.
"There's a new mindset"
There isn't a single Rangers fan on the planet that accepts second best.
What an absurd suggestion.

John Greig played for a decade winning next to nothing.
Stupid to evaluate a player's ability on the strength of his trophy hall.
Extremely stupid.

Tav's been getting it the neck from incredibly clueless roasters from the day he signed.

The John Greig comparisons are truly brainless by the way. He wasn’t shitting his pants seasons after season and playing in an era where two sides are so far ahead of the rest it’s absurd.

On the first point, I speak to many of these Rangers fans you claim don't exist every day. A friend said to me last night, 'might be ok playing in that Europa Conference thing as we'll probably never be able to compete in the Champions league again'. If that isn't second best thinking I don't know what is.

Second point, any argument you bring forward where Tavernier is compared to John Greig is baffling, laughable and unworthy of a response.

Lastly, I'll continue to argue that Tavernier is nowhere near good enough to be our captain and first choice right back. An average right mid player in my humble-roaster opinion.

Just a thought to finish, why have we never received one credible and tempting bid from any other team for John Greig, sorry I mean, James Tavernier.

You just compared James Tavernier to John Greig. Let that settle in for a moment.

No I didn't .

John Greig is rightly considered The Greatest Ever Ranger, but he can't be held responsible for Rangers trophy failures, throughout the late 60s and early to mid 70s.

If evey one of our players had contributed as much as James Tavernier had over the past few years, then our trophy haul would be considerably higher.
I'm sure that the same would've applied to Greig, during that dismal domestic period under White and Waddell.

Absolutely nowhere did I compare Tavernier with Greig on ability, I hadn’t noticed the @Highway Star post when I mentioned Greig. It would seem you are having great difficulty working out what the Greig reference is really about.

But I think you actually do know what the Greig reference was about, you’re not that daft.

In case you are that daft, think a bit deeper and see if you can work out why it’s a huge compliment to Greig.

As for fans accepting second best. You originally didn’t imply you were talking in Euro terms, in fact I’m almost certain that wasn’t the implication.
I don’t know a single Rangers fan who’s happy to play 2nd fiddle to the filth.
Do you?

P.S. Your friend is actually accepting 3rd best if you want me to be pedantic.

Great post. The treatment Tav gets on here is disgusting he was our top scorer in Europe and has single handedly won us countless games.

I wonder how Cooper and his inconsistent performances would have seen him viewed on here :D

Apart from Tav and Goldson I'd say Sima. He's the only one that will probably move on and have a good career somewhere else.

I don’t know how you can say that. He continually steps up when the chips are down and produces big moments for us.

That the rest of the team are honking isn’t his responsibility.

Was talking to my mate about last nights game and he asked me that question after his rant about how shit he thought the vast majority of our players were.

It’s actually quite a hard question to answer and I thought Tav because he is probably out most consistent performer but we don’t really have anyone that puts together five 8/10 performances back to back.

Lammers.

Just because everyone else is giving bonkers answers.

You’re wasting your breath with those halfwits.
Whenever Tav plays well, scores or/and assists they are nowhere to be seen.
Not man enough to give him praise, but hell mend him when he has a poor game.

They come out in their droves spouting bile whenever he has one of his poorer games.
It is full on hatred.

Clueless to a man.

How were you, when under Waddell, finishing 2nd was a good season?
Finishing 3rd, or even 4th, (behind the mighty St Johnstone), was the reality during his tenure.

Losing 3 games to celtic at Ibrox within a month,
(0-3, 0-2, 2-3) was also part of accepting mediocrity then.

I know that unfortunately the board is full of them just now :D

Not really mate.

From 1965 to 1974, celtic won the league every season.
1975 Rangers
1976 Rangers
1977 celtic
1978 Rangers

John Greig then retired.

I don't think anyone is comparing Tavernier and Greig.
I'm certainly not.
Greig is The Greatest Ever Ranger and Tavernier is nowhere near close to that.

Just pointing out that neither can be held responsible for the player and managerial deficiencies around them.

If he had played in a Walter Smith side and scored the goals he has although he wouldn’t have been on pens with Super about he would be classed a legend without doubt.

Unfortunately for Tav he joined us when we were in the Championship and have always been up against it in terms of winning trophies. From the Championship to captaining the team that stopped their 10iar undefeated and led us to a European Cup final in a competition where he was top goalscorer he gets nowhere near the credit he deserves imo.

Another one that can’t work out why Greig was mentioned (not compared).
Okay comparison is the wrong word, the mere mention of him is utterly stupid. You can’t look at winless periods from players about 60 years apart under hugely differing circumstances and accuse other people of being clueless.

But groupies will be groupies.

On current form Lundstrum or Sima. If Cantwell gets into the groove in his preferred position that could change.

Now Willie Waddell branded 'accepting of mediocrity'. We'll leave it there..

For all of these times that he's supposedly stepped up I'd make two points. 1. How many of these have lead to silverware or winning really crucial matches. 2. If I was to list the games where he was posted missing when we needed leadership and example, the list would be very long. I'll leave it there.

He is one player within the team. He seems to be labelled as the team when things go wrong

Genuinely struggle to pick who is the best 2-11, but the only player I worry about not starting is Goldson.

Tav is the first name on the team sheet. We have no proper cover for him (mental). His numbers are amazing and he has scored important goals for us time-and-time again. It's Tav. He's more consistent than the naysayers will have you believe too. There's just a disproportionate reaction when his form dips. Normally only for a game.
Other than Tav it's probably Goldson, Lundstram and we have really missed Jack since coming off the international break.
What a damning indictment of progress.
Anyone who says Cantwell hasn't factored in attitude or consistancy.

If Tav’s not your answer you’ve been watching with the lights off for 8 years
Tav is the probably the best of a very poor squad and Tav at his peak was very decent. Tav has been miles off that and penalties are pulling him out the bag. His defensive qualities are pretty poor but my response is about the rest of the squads abilities. If you still think he's very good then you need to turn your balaclava round the correct way when watching the game
