Rangers Open Transfer Talks With West Ham RB Ben Johnson

Can we please just have a window where we're not linked to guys on massive wages from the lower PL or Championship in England. It very rarely works.

Lot of players we signed recently from down south have worked out ok.

Bassey, Aribo, Arfield, Butland, Defoe, Davis, Tav and Sterling and Cantwell might come good.

Obviously been a few failures as well along the way as well.

I think we need cast a wide net but be good business geting Johnson on a free.

Like the look of this transfer. Can't see it happening though. Rumour was he was after £60,000 a week at West Ham to stay.

If however we do, then he's young enough to still be flipped for profit. This isn't like we're throwing dead money at a late 20's Championship level player like Dowell, Davies or Lawrence that we'll never be able to shift.

Still think a lower league EPL club would come in and blow us out the water financially.

I’ve seen him linked to quite a few clubs recently Feyenoord, Villarreal, Betis, Southampton, Wolves, Leeds Utd & Palace.

109 appearances in the Premier League so good pedigree. People will read into the Tav rumours but well overdue to have a 2nd option and give him stiff competition.
Should give him a stiff push out the door. Bollocks to sentiment, thanks for your efforts Tav but the team bottling this title race is unforgivable.

Maybe he sees it as a way to play every week, European football and a chance to win trophies.

I am doubtful on this one tho. Think he will stay in the EPL
If we could come close to matching offers he will get in England id agree mate. But, with his pedigree and reputation, he will be looking at well north of 40k a week id guess, plus a big signing on fee and a a long contract.

West ham based publications seem to say he was after between 50 and 60k to stay, depending on what one you read.

As much as im sure he would love game time and euro football, there is just now way we compete with what he will get down south unfortunately.

Also ignore the Record spinning that West Ham are releasing him and letting him go. Johnson has rejected multiple contract extension offers from them.

The right-back has rejected multiple contract offers from West Ham. Their recent offer was a four-year package, but both parties failed to reach an agreement. In February 2022, the versatile defender turned down a six-and-a-half-year deal.

The former England under-21 international has made 22 appearances this season, but most have been cameo appearances from the bench having struggled to dislodge first-choice right-back Vladimir Coufal.

Johnson won the young player of the year award in 2021 and won both the UEFA Europa Conference League and UEFA European U21 Championship in the summer of 2023.

He might be at the level of deserving 60k by being as good as his peers but there's limited spots in the premier league. Right back is usually a place most clubs have at least 1 solid option so they'd only be paying 60k to bring him in if he was first choice. You've instantly narrowed it down to about 2 clubs at that point.

Problem is, im sure he takes either of those 2 rather than say 30k a week less to come to us

Sterling will be used in midfield going forward IMO.

Tav is 32, he cant play every game so a new a RB makes complete sense.

If Tav goes we’ll still need another 2.

A bit strange imo when we have Sterling as a back RB if required

Maybe there are legs in the Tavernier rumours
I think most are in agreement that Sterling's future lies in the middle of the park. I don't think this necessarily indicates the end for Tav

Clement has said more than once this ain’t Diomande’s last stop he’s going higher than Rangers he might have the same vision for Johnson come in play a season or 2 and go back south and get your move to better things with more experience

My mates a season ticket holder at WHU and he reckons he has agreed a deal with Crystal Palace.
