Tonali banned for 10 months + 8 months in gambling rehab

ridiculous how betting is seen as worse than both of them. I understand it's an addiction & folk need help, but it's self inflicted and you can get help. Being a racist & an animal abuser is far worse.
It’s because money is involved and we all know that’s worth more than a human life. Look at the sentences handed down nowadays for murder & armed robbery. That tells you all you need to know.

He still broke the rules tbf. You don't let a junkie get away with breaking in and stealing stuff because he is addicted, do you ?

He is getting the help he needs but also needs to be punished imo.
Exactly. He’s not being banned for being an addict, he’s being banned for breaking the rules of the sport.

You can’t just let someone off with such a severe rule breach because they’ve got a gambling problem, meanwhile, they could be influencing others or their own games outcomes.

Hypocrisy at its finest.

I get the rules against players betting, but you can't also have bet companies on football shirts and advertising boards across stadiums.

It's like having a pick-nick and then harshly punishing the seagulls.
In Canada we have current hockey players promoting online gambling!
Crazy!

Why do players gamble anyway.

Most folk gamble for a bit of a thrill or looking to win a decent amount to help their financial situation which is obviously very dangerous as you can essentially bankrupt yourself but some people do it from being desperate. Then there is for the fun of it.

Footballers like Tonali are millionaires and the thrill of playing fat exceeds a coupon. Pure greed is the only reason imo.
Adrenaline rush imo!

Chelsea sacked Mutu when he got banned for the Charlie ages ago & sued him for $17m breach of contact. No idea if they ever got the money though but they did win in Court.

Newcastle probably don't want the bad PR so wouldn't be surprised if they make a song and dance about 'helping him'

Newcastles owners will likely stone Tonali or make him “ disappear “!!!! Like they have history for - allegedly

I can't understand why bets aren't made on his behalf.

Probably as his mates etc know how bad he is, I expect he starts and just cannot stop - be betting in play etc non stop - need to know the full score though on that front. It wasn't legal sites he was betting on as well.

The first public hint that something was amiss arrived when Tonali, along with the Aston Villa loanee winger Nicolò Zaniolo, was removed from the Italy men’s training camp last Thursday after a police raid – by officers from Turin’s flying squad – at Coverciano, the team’s Florence training centre, relating to allegations of players betting online via unauthorised websites.

He and Zaniolo, on loan from Galatasaray, had their mobile phones and tablets seized as part of a long-running Italian investigation into illegal betting inside football thought to involve at least 12 players.

How is it crazy? That makes total sense, sports stars promoting a revenue generator that also gets people watching their sport.

This is the thing with gambling, it’ll never go away. People want it to be outlawed and it’s just not going to happen. Even if every government in the world shut down betting companies tomorrow, there would immediately be a black market that would pop up to meet demand, and this wouldn’t come with the financial support for gambling addiction and the initiatives that are in place to help people break addictions, self isolate etc.

The point around gambling sponsorship is the biggest red herring going on the subject IMO. If you’re a gambling addict, immersed in a dressing room culture, then needing to wear an arbitrary logo saying ‘32Red’ or whatever on a shirt isn’t going to make you run for the nearest bookies. If you’re actually addicted, the issues are far more deep rooted than that. That’s where someone like Paul Merson becomes unstuck, because he’ll happily monetise his stories of crazy drink binges with Gazza for laughs, or sell cannabis products via his Twitter which are also addicitive, but because his vice is gambling then advertising it should be outlawed.

Obviously in hindsight you can see he’s bang to rights. How does a player go about making worthwhile money on this though? Surely if a high street bookie gets say £100k worth of bets on him to get booked when normally they take £1k on the market alarm bells right there and then? Although I’ve no knowledge of it, should you do a bet like that through underworld sources, surely you get your legs broken when you turn up having fleeced a gangster?

Aye, people think you can just get a lump on and no questions are asked. Various ways to try it but none are easy. It’s more likely he owes underworld firms cash and to wipe the debt they ask him to get booked, they get on somehow knowing it’s going to be done but christ he’s left that left if that was the score in that match, injury time wow.
